Winter time and fish are rising. It is time to take advantage of a small window. What do you do? A little midge will do the job. The Biot Midge is a perfect small fly imitation. The slim natural body with the white tag biot wing allows the fly to rest low below the hackle. It also provides a nice trigger point. Tie it in various sizes and colors. It is a solid option in black and the smallest of sizes when the Tricos are about.
Step-by-Step Instructions:

Start with light locking wraps of thread. I prefer small, strong threads such as Veevus 18/0 or Semperfli Nano Silk 30D

Select a Goose Biot from the quill. Identify the concave of the biot. Tie in the biot with the concave outward from the hook shank. This will help ensure the biot flares as you wrap it forward.

Create a small dubbing ball behind the thorax, ahead of the abdomen. Create a tight noodle with superfine dubbing and wrap a few wraps around the hook shank. This will act as a prop for the biot wing.

Add a single biot as the wing. This can be either goose or turkey. I prefer to keep the concave side down in this instance. It helps to wrap the biot around the body, making it feel whole. Wrap your thread forward and create a smooth base for the next step.

Choose a nice piece of dry fly hackle. This can be a variety of colors based on the variation you are tying. Ensure it is gauged to match the hook you are using. You can use the hook gap to measure the barbles against. Prep your feather by either cutting or stripping a few barbles off the butt end of the feather.

Secure the hackle to the hook shank at the rear of the thorax in front of the dubbing ball. You want the hackle to be flared when tied in. Keeping it as perpendicular to the hook shank as possible will prevent twisting when wrapping. Palmer the hackle forward and secure with the tying thread. Whip finish and fish!
